Planning a trip to Bangkok, Thailand?

One of my favorite types of travel experiences is being in a city, where no matter which direction I look, I know I’m in a different country.  Bangkok is where I came to this realization.  It’s a fascinating and buzzing city, full of life and fantastic sites to see.

I have traveled to Bangkok twice.  It’s a great way to start a Thailand vacation. There are so many fun things to do.

This Bangkok travel itinerary is great for family travel, couples travel, or friends traveling together.

This 4 days in Bangkok itinerary and guide is detailed and will cover all of the top things to do with plenty of time for taking in the culture, shopping, and some time for a little relaxation.  Make sure to stay at one of the best hotels in Bangkok, recommended below (just click on the links to make a reservation.)

There are lots of great places to eat delicious Thai food in Bangkok at all price ranges. Plan to spend some time eating at some great restaurants or street food and try as many of the local foods as possible (see link below for Thailand’s food master, Mark Weins.)

You can easily condense this into a 2 day Bangkok itinerary or 3 day Bangkok itinerary, but you would need to pick up the pace.  Or, just choose the days or segments that look the most interesting to you.  This itinerary is great for family travel, couples travel or friends traveling together.

Stay at a centrally located hotel with a pool (for cooling off and a little relaxing), with breakfast included (it makes it so easy, and many of the nice hotels in Southeast Asia have fantastic breakfast buffets.)  I recommend staying in 4 or 5 star hotels in Bangkok only, always with the highest ratings on all booking sites.

DAY 2 in Bangkok

If you are up before 6:00, go join the locals for their morning Tai Chi class at Lumpini Park, then return to your hotel for a relaxing breakfast.  Set out to see the Palace and some temples.  Ask the hotel to get a taxi for you (or tuk tuk,) or take the Chao Phraya River Express Boat to the magnificent Grand Palace.  Get here early to beat the heat and crowds.  Walk around the beautiful grounds of the complex and marvel at the architecture of the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaeo, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

Bangkok Travel Tip

When visiting the wats (temples), make sure you dress according to the standard of no need or shoulders exposed.

Make your way over to Wat Phra Chetuphon or Wat Pho, known as the Reclining Buddha (it’s one of my favorites.)  Take some time to walk around and see the incredible sites in this complex.  You may want to stop for a rest and lunch break at this point, especially if you are traveling with kids.  It’s a good idea to move away from all of the tourist attractions to find some of the best local food.

The National Museum is north of here and has some incredible things to see. However, museums aren’t for everyone, so read about it and if you are interested, then go!

Cross the river and see the majestic Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn.  Climb to the top of the temple for the stellar views of Bangkok.

Catch the Chao Phraya River Express Boat or a taxi back to your hotel.  Here is the boat schedule.  Spend some time relaxing by the pool then have a massage at your hotel.

Take a tuk tuk out to a nearby authentic Thai restaurant for dinner.

DAY 3 in Bangkok

Start out your day with breakfast at your hotel, then hire a tuk tuk to take you to Wat Benchamabophit, the Marble Temple (it’s featured on the back of the 5B coin!), and then to Wat Saket, the Temple of the Golden Mount.

Next, have the tuk tuk drop you off at the Jim Thompson House (also known as “The Silk King.”)  Tour the museum, then shop for some souvenirs (my silk compact mirrors lasted for years!)  Plan for a local Thai lunch nearby (the restaurant inside of the House is popular, but a touristic.)

Bangkok Itinerary

Take a 2 hour long tail boat ride through the canals.  See the lush tropical foliage and how the locals live.
