This 7 day Greece itinerary is one of my favorite travel experiences and will take you to some of the best places to visit in mainland Greece. You will see the top tourist attractions and go to special local places to get some culture.
Where to go in Greece…
For this fun-filled Greece vacation, you will start in Athens, one of the best cities in Europe for having the top historical and archeological sites. This 2 day Athens itinerary will guide you to the best places to visit in Athens, Greece.
If you only have 1 day in Athens, follow the first day of the itinerary.
After Athens, the plan includes renting a car and taking a Greece road trip to the mystical Oracles of Delphi.
You will then continue on to begin the Peloponnese itinerary- the home of the original Olympics in Olympia, Greece.
Then, to continue on this Greece travel itinerary, you will take the beautiful drive through the Peloponnese, to the Aegean beach town of Nafplio (also called Nafplion.)
Several historical and fun day trips are easy from here, with plenty of time to relax and visit the beach when you return.
If you have another few days you can do a 10 day Greece itinerary and visit a Greek island. If you have an additional week, you can go Greek island hopping with a 2 week Greece itinerary. Fly from Athens to Santorini, Naxos, Crete, or another Greek island.

DAY 1: Including the must see in Athens (great if you only have 1 day in Athens) and a day tour option
Self Guided Athens Walking Tour
- Start with one of the top places to visit in Athens. Hike up the Acropolis and tour the Parthenon, on your way down see Mars Hill (where the Apostle Paul preached to the Athenians).
- Stop for a typical Greek lunch (see below).
- Visit the Acropolis Museum via a stroll through the Anafiotika area.
- Tour the Ancient Agora
- End the day with dinner in a Greek taverna

DAY 2: More must see in Athens tourist attractions
- Walk by the Temple of the Olympian Zeus and Hadrian’s Arch, through the Plaka, and continue by the Acropolis to Monastiraki Square (you may want to visit the daily flea market here.)
- Continue on to Syntagma Square. If it’s Sunday, don’t miss the Changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at 11:00.
- Have lunch then take a taxi to the National Archeological Museum for a stroll through one of the best museums in the world.

- Eat Greek! Start your day out at a Greek yogurt bar. Fresko opens at 7:00 in the morning and is near the Acropolis and Parthenon.
- For lunch, find good gyros (and fries!) in or near the Plaka, they are cheap and delicious.
- Have dinner in a Greek taverna in the Thissio and Psyrri area.

1 Day Olympia itinerary
GET THERE
How to get to Olympia, Greece
*Look at the map of locations in Athens, and make sure to check how early they open. I recommend finding one that opens by 8:00, so you can get an early start. When picking up your car, ask about their hours and what the protocol is for after-hours drop off (if you can’t make it while they are open.)
Visit Delphi
- Start your drive heading NORTH then WEST towards Delphi, one of the top historical sites in Greece (and well worth the 2 1/2 hour drive.)

- After you have visited the site, enjoy lunch in town at Dionisis Souvlaki Gyros Pita. Order the famous Greek gyros and fries (it’s delicious!)
- Continue on the drive south to the Peloponnese, past the Roman aqueduct, and down to Olympia.

- Get an early start and tour the Unesco World Heritage site where the Olympics began. Olympia was an ancient Greek sanctuary site dedicated to the worship of Zeus, in whose honor the Pan-Hellenic Olympic Games were held every four years from 776 BCE to 393 CE. Make sure to take a photo and video of your family running on the original track (see photo above). This was featured in our Top Family Experiences.

4 Days Nafplio

How to get to Nafplio
- Take the 3 hour leisurely drive through the Peloponnese to Nafplio. Stop halfway for lunch or coffee and baklava- there are some beautiful tiny towns in this area.

Fun things to do in Nafplio
- Go to the beach and swim in the warm Aegean waters.
- Walk around, check out the Palamidi castle (walk up countless stairs or drive in from the other side,)
- Visit the Archeological Museum.
Day trips from Nafplio
- Take a tour of the fascinating Mycenae, dating between the 14th and 14th century BCE! Then visit the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Mycenae.
- Take the small ferry boat to the authentic Greek island of Hydra, one of the most beautiful islands in Greece. Walk around town, eat some seafood in a Greek restaurant, and lounge at a beach.
- On your way back to Nafplion, go by the Ancient Theatre of Epidavros Amphitheater, the best-preserved ancient theater in Greece.
- On your way back to Athens, visit Ancient Corinth and see the Temple of Apollo. Walk around the site where the Corinthians once lived.

Fly home or visit a Greek island or two
Fly out of the Athens International Airport or take a ferry from one of the ports. If you are flying home or to your next destination, the airport would be the best place to drop your car.
If you are taking a ferry to a Greek island, then try to drop your car off nearby. If you are staying in Athens, then drop your car off at the same location that you picked it up.
